Recent
years have witnessed a growing recognition of the vital role that health
professional selection, education, regulation and practice play in the
delivery of health care. Today, important initiatives through federal
and state governments, in educational institutions and at care delivery
sites are addressing critical health care challenges by changing
the health professional workforce. These programs include ground breaking
work around nursing and allied health shortages, racial and ethnic diversity
of the health professions, primary care definition and access, and health
professional work and economic development.
The Health Workforce Tracking Collaborative was established to track
the progress of these programs and their impact on critical health care
challenges facing California and the nation. Three foundations
The California Wellness Foundation, The California Endowment and the California
HealthCare Foundation are partners with the Center for the Health
Professions in this collaborative. Working together, the Collaborative
identifies critical questions, collects needed data, evaluates progress
and makes assessments of efforts to improve and support Californias
health care workforce.

Registered Dental Hygienists in California: Regional Labor Market Chart Book (2005-2006). Much is known about the dentist workforce and about the utilization of dental care, but few studies have focused on the supply of and demand for dental hygienists. The labor market for dental hygienists is locally situated and responsive to variations in multiple factors at the local level. This study explores the labor market for the California dental hygiene workforce at a regional level, providing policy makers, professionals and educators an unprecedented look at local labor market dynamics which contribute to the provision of preventive dental care. Collecting Health Workforce Data in California. One of the limitations policy makers face in California has been limited data about health care professionals. This issue brief explores how several California regulatory boards compare to each other and to other states on collecting information about which professionals are practicing where in the state. An analysis follows the chart and offers examples and promising models from other states that have implemented strong health workforce data systems. Click here for
